All parties must come to an end; so as the closing demarcation of a 5-day culinary quest through LA, the last deliverance by Shanghai Restaurant was nothing short of spectacular!

It is well known fact that the Valley Blvd hosts a vast variety of restaurants representing all ethnics and regionals of China, some with greater or lesser degree of authenticity or flamboyance than others; and it would be without merits to compare them unless of course all being the same caliber. Nevertheless, this particular establishment truly is amongst the brightest stars in the realm of culinary sensations.

For those whom relentlessly pursuit the pure dining perfections might find this review strangely bias or even unjustifiably generous with the 5-star rating. Well, it is perhaps that not all things could be viewed from the same perspective. Surely the ambiance left much to be desired and service was fare at best, yet what truly matters is not merely the fact the food tasted genuinely authentic, but more importantly, it's unuttered effort of preserving a moment in history, a time before the rise of mass commercialization of "orange chicken" restaurants in every city of America. So like a "seasoned" warrior, Shanghai Restaurant stood fast with the spatula as its sword and wok as its shield, unflinchingly facing an enemy of thousand fortunate cookies monsters, ready for battle!

We had a great experience at this authentic Chinese restaurant and the food was truly amazing. Our large group were served a delightful course of pork, vegetable, fish and mabo tofu dishes with a delicious and hearty soup.   Our service was quick, professional and courteous and the overall atmosphere was bright and clean. The restaurant is frequented by Chinese people and it was getting a bit crowded during lunch time.  So, you know its a good indicator that the place serves authentic Chinese cuisine and it must be good.

We're are going to make the trip to this restaurant again!

Sometimes the best things stare you right in the face. What's the best Shanghainese restaurant in San Gabriel Valley? Why, it's Shanghai Restaurant!

Now I know what you're thinking... isn't Shanghainese cuisine all about soup dumplings? To be sure, xiaolongbao is an integral part of the experience, but Shanghainese food is so much more. While SGV may seem like a constant 3-way throwdown between Cantonese, Sichuan, and Northern Chinese food, Shanghai cuisine is no slouch by any means.

My first outing to Shanghai Restaurant was because some of my Korean chingoos had the audacity to say that Korean soup was superior to Chinese soup. As their tastebuds were not sophisticated enough to appreciate Cantonese herbal soups or Muslim Chinese lamb soups, I turned to my fellow Chinese food aficionados for a worthy challenger to their false Korean superiority complex. I was not disappointed.

Whether you order hot and sour soup, any of the fish soups, or classic Shanghainese pork belly and vegetable soups, you can't go wrong here... everything is hot and flavorful. In addition to the soup, they make wonderful lion's head meatballs, braised pork belly, Shanghainese glutinous rice shumai, and perhaps everyone's favorite, Shanghainese fried rice served piping hot in a clay pot.

On top of all that, the food here is affordable... for a party of 3, just spending $20-25 each means you eat like a king!

Who would've thought that Shanghai Restaurant would be the best place to go when you're looking for a great... Shanghai restaurant? Insane. Now I can't wait to eat at other city-named restaurants... Beijing Resaurant here I come!

Great food with good company! I'm here with my family after we pay respects for grandma  - today is the death anniversary. Finding parking around lunch time is difficult but you will with patience. The Sapporo beer  tastes so good.

I had a nice lunch date here. This restaurant is located in 99 Ranch Plaza. Parking was easy. Shanghai does have a lunch special.

We decided to order a couple of dishes. We came here for the Shanghai Fried Rice. My friend and I love Shanghai Fried Rice. We ordered the pan-fried pork buns, seaweed fish, and kung pao chicken. The pan-fried pork buns were so pretty. The buns had a crispy bottom and juicy inside. My favorite was the seaweed fish. It was delicious.

Service was great. The lunch special is served with soup, also.
